Songs and Stories from Carlow
A special night during Fleadh Laighean 2018 in Muine Bheag
For the last six months there has been an active, but hidden, search for songs and recitations written here in our native county over the last few centuries. Can we finally free ourselves of the shackles of the well-known and hackneyed versions of ‘Follow me up to Carlow’ – that Wicklow song that has become an anthem of Carlow, merely because it mentions the word, ‘Carlow’?!
On Tuesday, July 10th, led by Dave Barron – who instigated the whole process – there will be a presentation of ancient and contemporary songs and recitations from the whole county of Carlow. The songs from antiquity were written and sung by people of Carlow for generations, the newly composed songs demonstrate the ongoing creativity and verve of a new generation of storytellers through folk music.
This concert, taking place at 8pm at Doyle’s Railway Bar, Muine Bheag, will launch the website which showcases this body of songs.
This is guaranteed to be a very special and wonderful night – all welcome.
